GENESIS II NECK KNIFE
Before I began my PCT trek, my friend Patrick with MT Knives asked me what knife I planned on taking on my trip. I told him I had carried a Gerber knife on the AT, to which he responded, “Gerbers are for babies.” He recommended his Genesis II knife that comes with a Kydex neck knife sheath, so it is always easily accessible.
I’ve been on trail for over a month now and so far I really love it. It’s comforting having easy access to self-protection while backpacking and hitchhiking. More importantly, I don’t have to search for my knife in my pack when I’m ready to cut summer sausage for lunch. My knife with the sheath and paracord is about 2.4 ounces. Also, it’s seriously sharp. Patrick prides his knives in being “beyond razor sharp.”
Folks have been asking about what knife I’m carrying on the PCT. I let Patrick know there was interest, and he is now offering a 10% discount on his knives for to my Patreon supporters. To learn more about supporting me on Patreon, go to

Happy Trails!

I will be posting a weekly gear-related item. It will always be something I have used or seen used enough that I would recommend. Hopefully, this helps initiate conversation about gear and assist beginning backpackers with gear selection.
Is it on a breakaway lanyard? IMHO, it can be a mistake to have anything around your neck that won’t break loose if gets snagged on something.
Yep! Sure is.
Maybe be because I’m from Canada but the code doesn’t work for me…..
Should be working now!
It is pretty bad ass! 😉
Wait just a second here, “Jessica.” You look a lot like Dixie. Does she know you’re using her picture? ????
Bet it will skin a rattle snake real easy.
The blade seems to be in a good place, I hope you never have to use it for self defense but if you do, it’s in the right position. I got a rather interesting collection of high res pictures in the mail from you and it looks like their the entire hiking collection. I’m contemplating what to do with them. LOL. I know that there are mis-guided folks out there that think rattlers should be protected (I’m not one of them) so I’ll just say, I would have ended that vipers life before you could say, Wait! The burrito didn’t look that good to me but I’m sure it was tasty. Some times when your hungry almost anything works. It’s good to see your keepin’ on, and hopefully by the time you get close to Tahoe I’ll be doing magic and maybe get a chance to meet you in person.
So much of what’s on my gear list is there because of the recommendations of past and current thru hikers. Definitely going to check out this knife. Thanks Dixie!
Awesome looking blade. Dixie, keep it up! Me and my 10 year old Grandson – Kamryn, have watched every single video you produced. We are west of Atlanta just a few clicks. Camped on the AT this past weekend. Good luck and keep the awesome inspiring videos coming.
Thank you! I’m so glad y’all are enjoying time on the AT together 🙂

NOBO. Don’t know yet where I’ll get off the trail yet…Family commitments, Going to be in New Mexico in August w/ my Son (Fenn treasure)…The treasure is to be with my son & meet my Christmas Baby Granddaughter… Love what you do, Thanks
Hello Dixie, I am following your videos from Switzerland! I have a question concerning your knife – does it ever slide out of the sheath? I am afraid I would loose the knife accidentally.
Thank you, keep on, Katharina
Switzerland–wow, that’s awesome!
To answer your question: Nope! It clicks in very tightly and I’ve never had any issues with it slipping out.
Thank you for following! 🙂
Dixie,
How come you updated this so that the code can only be used for patreon? I was sad as I went to buy the knife today and noticed you changed it. Thanks.
